Tim Cartmell's Shen Wu Combat
About a month ago we went to a Sun-Style Bagua seminar with Tim Cartmell. There was an incredible amount of grappling involved, but it was very different than Judo or conventional wrestling. This is a demo for an upcoming video they are producing. It shows how they mix stand-up fighting with grappling, in Shuai Jiao (Chinese wrestling) techniques. Notice the smooth flowing entries, more representative of the Internal Martial Arts. There are also some unique counter-techniques. Towards the end, Tim lets his partner grab his kicking leg, then drops to the ground supported by his arm, uses his free leg to sweep the opponent. Pretty cool stuff!

I think it's super interesting that you would say that it looks nothing like judo.
Because to me, it looks a great deal like Judo. There were only one or two throws that I didn't recognize. Now, Pat knows far more throws then I do so he might could say all of them were similar to Judo-ish throws.
The initial connection to the opponent were different but the entries to the throws and the throws themselves look really similar to throws I've been hit with in a judo class.
Anyway, great video, all of the throws looked impressively clean. That is, mechanically pristine rather then just muscling the guy around.
Tbanks.
Hi Strugg...
The entries look very different to me,As well as the flow after. As far as body dynamics, I suppose much is the same...
I'd have to agree with Struggler. My first thoughts (and second and third) were that they are doing a nice mixture of judo and aiki randori - mostly just as we do them. I think that the difference that you are seeing, DR, is in the ruleset. as an example, BJJ and Kodokan Judo and Kosen Judo are the same thing. You might never get a BJJ guy to admit that, but that's just a marketing ploy. The reason that they look different is different competition rulesets are forbiding and rewarding different behaviors. In the case of this Shenwu video, they are doing judo in an aiki-like way (like you mentioned - 'more representative of internal MA') apparently using more of a 'gentleman's sparring' sort of ruleset rather than a competitive judo or BJJ ruleset.
I liked the smooth flowing motion and entry from one range to the next. I'd like to see more of this type of mixed - aiki/ju type Chinese grappling.
Thanks for making those points Patrick, I agree. I thought you guys might like this...
