Building The Saloon

Barlow Trail Saloon, Oregon

Followers of the Dojo Rat Blog probably know that We've been building a Dodge City-type Cowboy Saloon up on the property. I mean, what guy wouldn't want his own Saloon; my wife has already bought me a keg cooler!

I showed my buddy Rocky a picture of a western Saloon similar to the old Barlow Trail Saloon above, and he drew up the materials list. I bought the lumber package at our local hardware store at a 10%-off sale, the cost was around $2500 bucks. Rocky built the whole damned thing in his head and put up with all our questions during the building process.

It took a day for me to excavate the building site, a day for us to lay out the footings, a day to pour the concrete, and two-or-three weekends to slam the building together. Man, it did take lots of Beer though! The exterior still needs trim work, more staining, handrails on the porch, gutters, a proper Saloon Sign etc. Then there's buying the insulation package, hanging the front door and starting on the interior.
This was a pretty low-budget but high quality building, and is kind of a dry-run for the cabin we are going to build soon.

And here's the start of our Summer party on Saturday night, it went on 'till 2am. I had our music stage all set up with lights and amplifiers but as soon as it got dark everyone gathered in the saloon for an acoustic music jam. We had two BBQ's going, the big smoker and a weber which the dogs managed to knock over late in the evening in an attempt to steal our salmon.
All-in-all, a very successful party! I'll be posting more pictures as the building goes together, as you can see - it's an ongoing project...

Got to love that. How many people get to build a saloon of their own?

This is really to awesome! But considering my predilections for bourbon, if I had a saloon, I am not sure I would ever leave. This is great.

What a great building!

My home used to be a tavern. The bar and back bar is now part of the house. In the basement, there is a cold storage room that is connected to the tap system. I hate to admit this...we never got it running. We converted the dining area into our dojo.

It is our endless project.

Damn. If I had that in my back yard I'd not get any martial arts practice in.

Now you just need to build... a jail.

An aikido black belt I know of lives in a small town up north. He owns the general store that serves the town.

The front of his building is the store. The back of the building is the dojo.

He and his wife (who is also Dan ranked) take turns training with various students and running the store.

No, The Saloon is at a secret undisclosed Island hideout located off the coast of Washington State!

The first thing I thought after reading this was how sorry it is that people spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on houses they now can't afford. Your saloon could have just as well been a basic house for that price.

Looking good.

What about naming it ? Any ideas ?

Now you just need a tea house, a Chinese laundry and a hatchet man.
I think you should call it:
Throwing Starbucks.

As far as naming it, the area we live in is called "Swamp Ridge" by the locals, so it will be "The Swamp Ridge Saloon".

Chinese Laundry?
Does it come with an Opium Den?

When are you moving into it?
:-)

Yes, it will by a perfect "Man Cave", a little home-away-from-home!
